The Passion According to St. Matthew............... J. S. Bach

PART I

Prologue - An invitation to the Bride (the church, daughters) to look upon the Bridegroom (Christ), the Lamb of God that takest away the sin of the world!

1. Chorus

Come, ye daughters, share my wailing.
See ye! Whom?
The Bridegroom see!
See Him! How?
A Lamb is He!
Children
O Lamb of God, most holy,
The bitter cross Thou hast taken.
Look ye! What?
How patient He.
At all times meek and lowly,
Though by Thy children forsaken.
Look! Ah, where?
Upon our guilt.
All sins by Thee were taken,
Else hope had us forsaken.
Look on Him, for love and grace,
He Himself His cross must carry!
Have mercy on us, O Jesu.
Come, ye daughters, share my wailing.
See ye! Whom?
The Bridegroom see!
See Him! How?
A Lamb is He!

Announcement of the Passion

2. Recitative (Matthew 26:1-2) - Evangelist -Christopher Aspaas, & Jesus - Leroy Kromm

When Jesus then had finished with all these sayings, He said to His disciples: Ye know the Feast of the Passover is but two days hence, and the Son of Man shall then be delivered up that they may crucify Him.

3. Chorale
Ah, dearest Jesus, how has Thou offended,
That such harsh judgment hath on Thee descended?
What deeds of evil bring Thee tribulation
And condemnation?

The Plot to Kill Jesus - Mary Anoints Jesus

4. Recitative (Mt 26:3-13) - Evangelist & Jesus

Then assembled all the chief priests and the scribes together with the elders of the people in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, and counseled there by what craft they might capture Jesus and kill Him. But thus they said: Not upon the feast, lest from it an uproar riseth, an uproar among the people.

Now when Jesus was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, came a woman there, and brought Him a jar of costliest ointment, and poured it on His head as Jesus sat at meat. But when His disciples saw it, they had indignation and said: To what purpose is this wasted? For a goodly sum this ointment might have been sold and been given the poor and needy. When Jesus had heard them thus, He said to them: Wherefore trouble ye the woman? It is a good work that she hath done. For here you have the poor with you always, but Me ye shall not always have. For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, this she hath done for my burial. Verily I say to you: Wherever this Gospel shall hereafter be preached throughout all the world, the deed that this woman hath done shall be told in her remembrance.

5. Recitativo - Kelly Liechty, contralto

Thou dearest Savior, Thou,
While Thy disciples foolishly quarrel,
Because this woman sought
With precious ointment brought,
For burial to prepare Thee,
Like her let me attend Thee now,
From weeping eyes full tearfuls flowing
An ointment on Thy head bestowing.

6. Aria (Mary Magdalene) - Kelly Liechty

Grief and shame
Rend my contrite heart in twain.
Teardrops falling, Mine anointing,
May they show as spices sweet,
Faithful Jesu, my thanksgiving.

Judas Conspires with the Chief Priests

7. Recitative (Mt 26:14-16) - Evangelist & Judas - Daniel Albers

One of Jesus' twelve disciples, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests, and he said: What sum will ye give me, if I will bring Him to you? And they promised him thirty silver pieces. And from that time sought he opportunity that he might betray Him.

8. Aria - Amy Prickett, soprano

Bleed and break, beloved heart!
Ah, a child, whom Thou didst nourish
At Thy bosom fondly cherish,
Foully plots by craft to slay Thee,
Like a very snake betray Thee.

Passover Preparation - Jesus Predicts Betrayer

9. Recitative (Mt 26:17-22) - Evangelist & Jesus

Now on the first day of unleavened bread came the disciples to Jesus, and said unto Him: Where wilt Thou, Lord, that we shall all eat the Paschal Lamb together? He said: Go ye into the city to a certain man and say: The Master bids us tell you: My time is at hand, at thy house I wish to keep the Passover with My disciples. The disciples hearkened, and did as Jesus had asked of them, and they there prepared the Paschal lamb. And when evening came He sat at the table with the twelve, and as they ate He told them: Verily I say to you: one of you who sits here shall betray Me. Then were they exceedingly sorrowful, and they began everyone of them to question and say unto Him: Lord, is it I?

10. Chorale

I it is who should be smitten,
My doom should here be written:
Bound hand and in hell.
The fetters and the scourging, The floods around Thee surging,
'Tis I who have deserved them well.

Judas Identified - The Institution of the Lord's Supper

11. Recitative (Mt 26:23-29) - Evangelist, Jesus & Judas

He answered to them and said: Who dippeth his hand with Me in the dish this evening, shall this night betray Me. The Son of Man goeth on His way as of Him it has been written; but woe unto that man by whom the Son of Man shall be betrayed. For him it were better, yes for that man t'were better had he not been born. Judas then, which betrayed Him, in answer spake and said: Lord, is it I? He said to him: Take ye, eat ye, this is my Body. And He took the Cup, and giving thanks, He gave it to them saying: Drink ye all of it; this is My Blood of the New Testament, which shall be shed for you, for many, for remission of their sins. I say to you, that from this day henceforth, I will no more drink the fruit of the vine until on that Day, when I drink it anew with you in My Father's Kingdom.

12. Recitativo - Amy Prickett

Alas! My heart is bathed in tears
That Jesus' dread departure nears,
Yet doth His Testament my soul uplift, His flesh and blood, O precious gift,
Bequeathed to me to hold and cherish.
As He was true to His disciples ever, To them was faithless never,
So loves us now that we not perish.

13. Aria - Amy Prickett

Lord, Thou Gift of my salvation,
Come to me, my Life, my Joy!
Into Thee, the Vine, engraft me,
There the world is far too small, For with Thee, Thou art my all,
More than world could ever be.

Two Predictions: Disciples Offense & Jesus' Resurrection

14. Recitative (Mt 26:30-32) - Evangelist & Jesus

And when they had sung a hymn of praise together, they went out unto the Mount of Olives. Then saith Jesus to them: This very night ye shall be offended because of Me. In the Scripture is written: For lo, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. But when I am arisen, then will I go before you to Galilee.

15. Chorale

My Guardian me remember,
My Shepherd me receive.
Thy hand doth bless me ever,
All good things Thou dost give.
Thy lips have often given
Me milk and honeyed Food
Thy Spirit hath from heaven
Sent endless joy and good.

Peter's Denial Predicted

16. Recitative (Mt 26:33-35) - Evangelist, Peter - Daniel Blosser, & Jesus

Peter then gave Him answer and said to Him: Though all men be offended because of Thee, yet will I, Lord, be never offended. Jesus said to him: Verily I say to you: This very night, ere yet the cock croweth, thou, Peter, thrice wilt deny Me. Peter said to Him: Lord, e'en though I should die with Thee, yet will I never deny Thee. And likewise also said all the others.

17. Chorale

Here would I stand beside Thee,
Lord, never let us part.
Nor will I ever leave Thee,
When breaks Thy loving heart.
When soul and body languish
In death's cold cruel grasp,
Then in Thy deepest anguish,
Thee in mine arms I'll clasp.

In the Garden of Gethsemane

18. Recitative (Mt 26:36-38) - Evangelist & Jesus

Then came Jesus with them unto a garden by name Gethsemane, and saith to His disciples: Sit ye here while I go yonder and pray there. He took with Him Peter and also both the sons of Zebedee and was very sorrowful and heavy. Then saith Jesus to them: Ah, my soul is sorely troubled, e'en unto death; tarry here and watch ye with Me.

19. Recitativo - Daniel Blosser, tenor

Ah woe!  How trembles His tormented heart;
It sinks away, how pale His countenance!
Chorale
Whence come these sorrows, whence this mortal anguish?
Before the judge must He appear;
There is no help, no comfort near.
It is my sins for which Thou, Lord, must languish;
He suffers hellish pain and terrors.
Ah, He must pay for others' errors.
Ah, if my love Thy stay could be, my Savior,
Could calm Thy fear or share it,
Could make it less or help to bear it,
How gladly 'bide I here!

20. Aria - Daniel Blosser

Yea, I would watch with Jesus gladly,
Chorus
As slumber all our sins away.
E'en my death ransom finds in His last breath,
His sorrow filleth me with gladness.
His pain and His obedient Passion,
How bitter, yet how sweet are they.
Yea, I would watch with Jesus gladly,
As slumber all our sins away.

Jesus Prays to His Father

21. Recitative (Mt 26:39) - Evangelist & Jesus

And He went yet farther and falling down upon His face He prayed and said: My Father, if possible, do Thou let pass this cup from Me; yet not as I will, but as Thou wilt.

22. Recitativo - Matthew Jeffords, bass

The Savior falling down before His Father; thereby has raised up me and all from our curse and fall, uplifted us and gained us mercy. He is prepared to drink the bitter, bitter cup, death's chalice, with all the sins of mortals filled and brimming o'er with hate and malice, for thus it was that God hath willed.

23. Aria - Matthew Jeffords

Gladly would I take my portion
Cross and cup in deep devotion
Drink it with my Savior here.
By His lips, with milk and honey flowing,
All its shame and bitterness removed,
Sweetness on its dregs bestowing.

Jesus Prays a Second Time

24. Recitative (Mt 26:40-42) - Evangelist & Jesus

Now He came to His disciples and found them sleeping and saith to them: Could ye not then watch with Me even for an hour? Watch ye, and pray ye, that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Again, He went away, praying, thus He said: My Father, if it must be that this cup pass not from Me, unless I shall drink it, then let Thy will be done.

25. Chorale

What e'er God wills, that shall be done,
His will is wise and holy.
His hand is there to help each one,
Trust Him, your Father, solely.
Our gracious Lord doth aid afford;
For kindness He doth chasten.
They who believe, they to Him cleave,
Shall never be forsaken.

Jesus Prays a Third Time - Judas' Betrayal

26. Recitative (Mt 26:43-50) - Evangelist, Jesus, & Judas

And again He came and found them sleeping, for all their eyes were heavy with sleep. And He left them, and again went away and prayed alone the third time, and spake again the same words. Then came He to His disciples, and said to them: Ah! Are ye still sleeping and resting? Lo, ye, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man to the hands of sinners now shall be betrayed. Thus arise, let us be going; Look ye, he is here who does betray Me. And as He was speaking, came Judas, who was one of the twelve disciples, and with him came a great array, with swords and with staves, who were sent by the priests and the elders of the people. Now this same Judas, who betrayed Him, had given to them a sign and said: "That one whom I shall kiss is He; Him, take ye!" And straightway came he to Jesus and said: All hail to Thee, O Master! And kissed Him. Jesus said unto him: My friend, wherefore art thou come here? Then came they unto Him, and laid they their hands on Jesus and took Him.

27. Aria - Renee Rybolt, soprano & Jennifer Arnold, mezzo-soprano

Alas, my Jesus now is taken.
Chorus
Loose Him, halt ye, bind Him not!
Moon and stars have for grief their light forsaken,
For my Jesus has been taken.
Loose Him, halt ye, bind Him not!
They lead Him on; ah, they have bound Him.
Where's lightning, where's thunder, from heaven to thwart them?
Then open your firery abysses, O hell!
Devour them, defile them, destroy them, confound them,
The bloodthirsty horde,
The falsehearted traitor, who murdered his Lord!

Peter's Sword - Disciples Flee

28. Recitative (Mt 26:51-56) - Evangelist & Jesus

Behold then, one of His disciples, who was there with Jesus, drawing his sword forth, he struck the high priest's servant, and cut the man's ear off. Then said Jesus to him: Put back thy sword into its sheath; for they that take the sword shall perish by the sword; for bethink ye now, were I to pray my Father now to help me, He would straightway give me more than twelve legions of angels. But how then shall be fulfilled the Scripture, that thus it must happen? In that same hour Jesus said to the people: Are ye come out here as though against a murderer, with swords and with staves, that ye may take me? Day after day I have sat beside you and daily have taught in the temple, yet ye laid no hold upon Me. But I tell you, all has been done, that there be fulfilled the Scriptures of the Prophets. Then did all the disciples flee and forsake Him.

29. Chorale with Children

O man - bewail thy dread mishap,
That Christ must leave His Father's lap,
For earth - a lost transgressor.
A lovely virgin, undefiled,
Here bore for us this Holy Child
To be our Intercessor.
He gave the dead His life that day,
And thus healed all disease away,
The hour already pending,
When offered up for us, His kin,
He bore our heavy load of sin,
Upon the cross extending.

Part Two

Prologue - The Bride laments her Bridegroom's arrest.

30. Aria - Jennifer Arnold

Ah! Now is my Jesus gone!
Chorus
Whither has thy Bridegroom departed?
O thou fairest, thou among women?
Must it be so, can I bear it?
Whither has thy Groom gone away?
Ah! My Lamb in tiger's clutches!
Ah! Where has my Jesus gone?
For we would go with thee to seek Him.
Ah! What, my spirit, can I say thee,
When thou wilt so anxiously ask me?
Ah! Where has my Jesus gone?

Trial in Caiaphas' Palace

31. Recitative (Mt 26:57-60a) - Evangelist

And they, who had so arrested Jesus, led Him away unto the high priest, Caiaphas, where with him were the scribes and the elders assembled all together. Peter also followed after Him afar off, unto the court of the high priest's palace; and went therein, and sat with the guards and servants, that he might witness, how all would be ended. The chief priests then, with all of the elders and the counsel, sought lying witnesses accusing Jesus, that He might be put to death, yet found they no one.

32. Chorale

The world for me has falsely set
With cunning mind, a snare and net,
To tempt me and to harm me.
Lord, make them fail,
Do Thou prevail,
Let their disguise not charm me.

33. Recitative (Mt 26:60-63a) - Evangelist, Eitnesses - J. Arnold and D. Blosser, & High Priest - M. Jeffords

Yea, though many lying witnesses were sought, they could find them none. At last, two there came who falsely witnessed in this wise: This fellow said: God's temple can I raze and destroy it, and in three days can I again rebuild it. The high priest then did arise and say to Him: Dost Thou answer naught to that which these have witnessed against Thee? Yet was Jesus still silent.

34. Recitativo - Daniel Blosser, tenor

He answers not, to lying lips is silent, that thereby He may show us how He, in steadfast loving kindness, for us with patience bears His lot. So may we, when in like distress, rely on His support, in persecution suffer calmly.

35. Aria - Daniel Blosser

Be calm, though the Serpent's lies shall sting thee.
Patient, ever bear thy lot.
Bear thou shame and scorn,
Ah, my God, their evil turn,
My heart's honor yet avenging!

36. Recitative (Mt 26:63b-68) - Evangelist, High Priest, & Jesus

And then the high priest gave Him an answer thus and said: I adjure Thee here before the living God, that Thou do tell us, if Thou be the Christ, the Son of God? Jesus saith to him: Thou sayest. Yet say I to you: Hereafter when ye see Him, ye shall see in that time the Son of Man, sitting at the Right Hand of Power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. There upon the high priest rent his robes asunder and said: He hath spoken blasphemy; what need we of further witness? Truly, ye all have heard the blasphemy that He has uttered. What think ye then? They answered Him and said: Of death this man is guilty! Then spat they on Him, yea, even in His face, and struck Him with their fists. Others among them mocked, and slapped Him in the face, and shouted: Thou prophet, now tell us, Thou Christ, by whom Thou art struck?

37. Chorale

O Lord, who dares to strike Thee,
As sinful to indict Thee,
Deride and mock Thee so?
Thou canst not need confession,
Who knowest no transgression,
As we and all our children know.

Peter's Denial in the Courtyard

38. Recitative (Mt 26:69-75) - Evangelist, Peter, and Damsel I - Martha Young, & Damsel II - Jennifer Arnold

Peter sat outside in the palace court, and a damsel came up to him, and said: And wert thou not also with Jesus of Galilee? But Peter denied it before them all, and said: I know not what thou sayest. And again, at the palace doorway, he was seen by another maid, who said to them who stood there with her: This one also was with Jesus of Nazareth. He denied it a second time, and swore an oath: I know not the Man. And in a little while came others, who had been standing there near him, and spoke thus to Peter: Surely, thou also art a disciple; thy speech doth clearly betray thee. And still did he deny with cursing and with swearing: I know not the Man. Immediately crew the cock. And Peter then recalled the Words of Jesus, who said to him: Ere yet the cock croweth wilt thou have three times denied me. Then he went out and wept bitterly.

39. Aria (Peter) - Kelly Liechty, contralto

Have mercy, Lord, my God,
Ah, how my tears are pleading!
Look on me,
Heart and eyes do weep before Thee bitterly.
Have mercy, Lord, my God,
Ah, how my tears are pleading!

40. Chorale

Though I too from Thee have parted,
Now I seek Thy face again.
For Thy Son, the loving-hearted,
Suffered grief and mortal pain.
I do not deny my guilt,
But Thy blood for sinners spilt
Cancels out all my transgression By Thy priestly intercession.

Judas' Remorse

41. Recitative (Mt 27:1-6) - Evangelist, Judas, High Priest I - D. Blosser and High Priest II - M. Jeffords

Now when the morning came all the chief priests gathered with the elders of the people to plot against Jesus, that they might kill Him. When He was bound, led they Him away, that they might deliver Him to the governor Pontius Pilate. When therefore Judas, the one who had betrayed Him, saw that He was condemned to death, was overcome by remorse, and brought once again the thirty silver pieces to the high priests and the elders and said: An evil deed have I done, for innocent blood have I this day betrayed. They said: And what is that to us? Go, see to it yourself! Then he cast the silver pieces down in the temple, and turned away and went out, and he hanged himself. But when the priests had gathered all of the silver pieces, they said: We may not, by the law, in the temple treasury, place them; it is the price of blood.

42. Aria (Judas) - Daniel Albers, bass

Give me back my Lord, I pray ye!
See, the price for murder done,
Cast by the tormented son,
At their feet, who paid it.
Give me back my Lord, I pray ye!
Bloodmoney buys Potter's Field - Jesus before Pilate

43. Recitative (Mt 27:7-14) - Evangelist, Pilate - M. Jeffords, & Jesus

And they took counsel among themselves, and with the silver pieces, bought a Potter's Field for the burial of strangers. And therefore the Field that they bought has been known as the Field of Blood, yea, to this very day. Then was fulfilled thus what had been foretold by the Prophet Jeremiah, when he said: "They took thereupon the thirty silver pieces, which was the price of Him that was sold, set by certain of the sons of Israel, and gave them for a field, which is called the Potter's Field, as did the Lord, my God, command me."

Jesus therefore stood before the governor; and the governor questioned Him and said: Thou sayest. And when they accused Him, those high priests and elders, He answered nothing. Then Pilate said unto Him: 44. Chorale

Commit thy way, confiding,
And all that gives thee pain,
To Him, whose care and guiding,
The powers of heaven sustain.
He points the clouds their courses,
Him winds and waves obey;
He will direct Thy footsteps,
And find for Thee a way.

Barabbas or Jesus

45. Recitative (Mt 27:15-22) - Evangelist, Pilate, & Pilate's wife - Renee Rybolt

Now at the Feast the governor had made it a custom, that he release from prison the one for whom the people should ask him. It happened that there was there a notorious prisoner, one whom all the people knew well, whose name was Barabbas. And when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them: Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or this Jesus, of whom it is said, He is Christ? For he knew full well that it was for envy that He had been delivered. And while he sat on the judgment seat, then did his wife send to him a message, saying: Have thou nothing to do with that innocent man; for I have suffered much this day in a dream, because of Him. Still did the high priests argue, and the elders, seeking to stir up the people, that thereby Barabbas be released, and that Jesus be crucified. And the governor again returned to the crowd and asked them: Now which of the two will ye, that I release to you? They shouted: Barabbas! Then Pilate said to them: And what shall I do then with Jesus, of whom it's said, He is the Christ? Again they shouted: Let Him be crucified!

46. Chorale

What punishment most strange is offered yonder!
The Shepherd dies for sheep that love to wander.
The Master pays the debt His servants owe Him,
Though they disown Him.

47. Recitative (Mt 27:23a) - Evangelist & Pilate

The governor asked them: But what evil deed has He done?

48. Recitativo - Amy Prickett, soprano

For us He naught but good has done.
The blinded gave He back their sight,
The lame can walk aright,
His Father's Word to us He brought,
And Satan set at naught;
The downcast He hath lifted up,
He takes in sinners, doth with them sup,
Evil, my Jesus, naught hath done.

49. Aria - Amy Prickett

For love now is my Savior dying,
For sin He dies, though He sinned not.
Sin and death and hell defying.
Our salvation thus is won,
For us all forgiveness buying.
For love now is my Savior dying,
For sin He dies, though He sinned not.

Crucify Him!

50. Recitative (Mt 27:23b-26) - Evangelist & Pilate

But cried they out all the more and shouted: Let Him be crucified! When Pilate had seen that he could in no wise prevail, but instead the tumult was even greater, he took water, and washed his hands before them all and said: I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man; ye see to it! Then together all the people answered and said: His blood be on all of us and on our children! Then Pilate set Barabbas free; but Jesus he had scourged, and delivered Him over to them, that they might crucify Him.

51. Recitativo - Kelly Liechty, contralto

Have mercy God!
Here stands the Savior chained and fettered.
O torturing, O wounds, O scourging!
Ye murderers, stay your hand!
Does not the sight of His soul's despair yet soften you, that you forbear?
But no, your heart is hard - it must be like a rock itself - and harder yet by far!
Have pity! Stay your hand!

52. Aria - Kelly Liechty

As my weeping and my pleading are of no avail,
I beseech Thee, then, O take this heart of mine.
And e'er let it be receiving,
Thine own blood from wounds now bleeding,
Flowing to the Cup for me.

Jesus before the Roman Guards

53. Recitative (Mt 27:27-30) - Evangelist

The guards of the governor came, and they took Jesus to the common hall, and gathered around Him all the soldier band, and stripped off His clothes, and brought for Him a purple robe and put it on Him, and braided a crown of thorns and set it upon His head, and a reed in His right hand, and bowed the knee before Him low, and mocked Him thus and said: We hail Thee, King of the Jews! And spat upon His face, and took the reed and smote Him upon His head.

54. Chorale

O Bleeding Head, now wounded
With grief and pain weighed down.
O Bleeding Head surrounded
With thorns Thine only crown.
O Bleeding Head what glory,
What bliss 'til now was Thine;
Yet though despised and gory,
I joy to call Thee mine.

Thou Countenance most regal,
Thou Face, which sinners dread,
With hate and force illegal,
They mock and strike Thy Head.
How pale Thou art with anguish!
The light which lit Thine eyes,
They fain would now extinguish,
Thee shamefully chastise.

Simon Carries Jesus' Cross

55. Recitative (Mt 27:31-32) - Evangelist

And after they had mocked Him thus, they took off from Him the purple robe, and clothed Him again in His own garment, and led Him away, that He might be crucified. And as they were going out they came upon a man from Cyrene, whose name was Simon, and compelled this man to carry Jesus' cross.

56. Recitativo - Daniel Albers, bass

Yea, truly flesh and blood is loath to bear the cross unless compelled;
The better for our spirit's good, the more bitter it becomes!

57. Aria - Daniel Albers

Come, blessed cross,
I want to tell thee, my Jesus,
May it 'bide fore'er!
And if too great my burden be,
I look to Thee for help to bear it.
Come, blessed cross,
I want to tell Thee, my Jesus,
May it 'bide fore'er!

At Golgatha

58. Recitative (Mt 27:33-44) - Evangelist

And when in this wise, they were come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say "The Place of Skulls," then they gave Him vinegar to drink that was mingled with gall; but when He tasted it, He would not drink it. And when the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided His garments by casting lots for them, that it might be fulfilled what had been foretold by the prophet: "They divided all my garments equally among them, and for my vesture they cast lots." Then they there all sat down, and set up a watch. And there above His head, they placed an inscription, telling what was His accusation, namely: "This is Jesus, the King of the Jews!" There were also two thieves, who with Him were crucified, one on the right hand, and one on the left. And all they who passed that way reviled Him, deriding, they wagged their heads and said: Thou who destroyst the temple of God, and buildest it again in three days, save Thyself. Be Thou the Son of God, come down to us, come down Thou from the cross! And likewise also did the chief priests mock Him thus with the scribes and with the elders and said: Savior was He of others, to save Himself He is helpless. If He be King of Israel, let Him come down from the cross, and we will then believe Him. He in God has trusted, let His God then deliver Him now, if He will, for this man has said: I am the Son of God. And also scoffed at Him the two thieves, which were crucified with Him.

59. Recitativo - Kelly Liechty, contralto

Ah, Golgotha, accursed Golgotha!
The Lord of Glory see in shameful desecration;
The blest Redeemer of mankind is spat on, tortured, and maligned.
Of earth and sky, from Him derived,
Will He who made them be deprived;
The sinless suffers condemnation,
So doth it weigh upon my soul.
Ah, Golgotha, accursed Golgotha!

60. Aria - Kelly Liechty

Look ye, Jesus open hand
Stretches out to every land.
Come!
Chorus
Ah, where?
In Jesus' arms receive redemption,
Find His mercy.
Seek it!
Where?
In Jesus' arms receive it!
Where?
In Jesus' outstretched arms.
Live ye, die ye, rest ye here,
As "Hen's Wings" protect chick's dear.
'Bide ye!
Where?
In Jesus' arms.
'Bide ye!
Where?
In Jesus' outstretched arms.

Jesus Dies

61. Recitative (Mt 27:45)-Evangelist & Jesus

Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land, until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried aloud and said: Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani! That is: "My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" Some of them who stood and watched Him, when they had heard Him, turned and said: He calleth for Elijah! And straightway one of them did run, and took a sponge, and filling it full of vinegar, he fastened it upon a reed, and gave Him to drink. The others spoke among them: Wait, wait, to see now, if Elijah cometh and will save Him? And again did Jesus cry out aloud, and was gone.

Truly This was the Son of God

63. Recitative (Mt 27:51-58) - Evangelist

And then behold, the veil of the temple was rended in twain, from very top to floor below. And the earth quaked and trembled, and the rocks burst asunder, and the graves again were opened, and there arose many bodies of saints of old, who were sleeping; and came from out of the graves after Jesus' resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared to many. Now when the centurian, and the others with him, who were there watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and those things that were done, they trembled greatly and said: Truly this was the Son of God. And many women were gathered there, from a distance beholding Him, who had followed after Jesus from Galilee, and had ministered unto Him; and among them there was Mary Magdalene, also Mary, the mother of James and of Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedaia. At evening came a certain wealthy man from Arimathia, by name Joseph, who was also one of Jesus' disciples. He went unto Pilate, and begged of him the body of Jesus. Pilate then commanded, that it be given to him.

64. Recitativo - Leroy Kromm, bass

At evening sweet, cool hour of rest, was Adam felled by Satan's test.
At evening too that Serpent's head was crushed.
At evening Noah's dove returned with leaf of olive in her bill.
O lovely hour! O evening still!
Our peace with God is evermore assured,
For Jesus hath His cross endured.
His Body is at rest.
Ah, take, beloved, thy bequest.
Go to receive the gift of His redemption.
O healing death, O treasure of salvation!

65. Aria - Leroy Kromm

Cleanse in me this heart of mine.
I would Jesus there be resting.
As Thy Body I receive,
Evermore and evermore,
May its sweetest rest betake me.
 World depart,
Come, Jesus, come!
Cleanse in me this heart of mine.
I would Jesus there be resting.

Jesus' Burial

66. Recitative (Mt 27:58-66) - Evangelist & Pilate

Then Joseph took the Body of Jesus, and wrapped it in a cloth of purest linen, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn from out of the solid rock; and when he had rolled a mighty stone to the door of the tomb, he went away. There were also in that place Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, who sat near to Jesus' grave. Now on the morrow, which followed the preparation, straightway there came the priests and the pharisees together unto Pilate, and said: Sir, we bear it in mind, that this base deceiver said, when He was yet alive: "Upon the third day will I once again be risen." Do thou command the tomb to be made secure, yea, until the third day, lest His disciples come by night there and steal Him thence, and say to all the people: "From the grave and death is He arisen;" so would then the last be a worse error than the first one. And Pilate said to them: Ye have a watch; go your way, and secure it as you may. So they went out, and they guarded the grave with watchmen, and they put a seal on the stone.

67. Recitativo - M. Jeffords, D. Blosser, K. Liechty & A. Prickett

And now the Lord is laid to rest.
Chorus
My Jesus, my Jesus, fare Thee well!
Thy labor done, forgiveness for our sins is won.
My Jesus, my Jesus, fare Thee well!
O precious, blessed Body, look,
With repentant grief and shame I'm weeping.
For mine own fall has brought to Thee such woe!
My Jesus, my Jesus, fare Thee well!
My thanks to Thee will flow a never ending stream,
That Thou hast held my soul in such esteem.
My Jesus, my Jesus, fare Thee well!

Epilogue

68. Chorus

Here 'bide we still with tears and weeping,
And call to Thee in death now blest.
Rest Thou softly, softly rest!
Rest Thou weary Body sleeping.
Rest Thou softly, rest Thou well!
See in grave and stone a peace
For the anxious, the despairing,
Heaven's pillow comfort bearing,
And the soul's sweet resting place.
Rest Thou softly, softly rest!
Come my joy, come my joy,
Slumber doth Thine eyes embrace.
Here 'bide we still with tears and weeping,
And call to Thee in death now blest.
Rest Thou softly, softly rest!
