On Saturday, October 30 at 7:00PM at the Fort Wayne History Center, 302 E. Berry St. , Fort Wayne, IN, the Fort Wayne Bach Collegium will host a fundraiser concert entitled "Bach in Berlin." Works for flute and keyboard by J. S. Bach will be featured, performed by Rob Turner, flute, and Janet Scott, harpsichord and clavichord. These splendid Bloomington-based musicians are donating their talents to support the Bach Collegium. Please join us!
The music on "Bach in Berlin," is associated with Johann Sebastian Bach's two documented visits in the 1740's to his son, Carl Philip Emmanuel, who was keyboardist at the court of the Prussian King Frederick the Great in Berlin. The second visit resulted in one of his greatest chamber works, the "Musical Offering," BWV 1079. The Musical Offering was dedicated to Frederick, who was an enthusiastic amateur flute player, as well as being a military genius and enlightened monarch. Among the gems on this program is a transcription of the trio sonata from the Musical Offering, originally for flute, violin, and basso continuo, for flute and obbligato keyboard Also on the program is the E-Major sonata for flute and basso continuo, BWV 1035, which was probably written for Frederick's valet and flute duet partner, Michael Gabriel Fredersdorf, as well as two sonatas for flute and obbligato keyboard in g-minor, BWV 1020, and E-flat Major, BWV 1031.
Both harpsichord and its much quieter cousin, the clavichord, were used as accompanying instruments for flute in the eighteenth century, and this will be a rare opportunity to hear both used in one concert. Rob Turner and Janet Scott are well-known to Fort Wayne audiences from their many performances with the Fort Wayne Bach Collegium, and this is an occasion to hear them performing intimate chamber works of Bach.
